The North First Avenue Bridge Project in Barstow, California, recently earned Engineering News-Record’s Southern California Best Projects Award of Merit in the Highway/Bridge category! The San Bernardino County Transportation Authority, in cooperation with the City of Barstow and BNSF, led the effort to replace the original 1930s structure: a 1,179-foot truss bridge that crossed 11 tracks, including three of BNSF’s main lines on the Southern Transcon.
The new concrete and steel bridge now offers wider pedestrian walkways, bike-friendly shoulders, and better access to schools, hospitals, and nearby neighborhoods.
