BNSF signal maintainer Gabriel Chavez loves his job. As a third-generation railroader, he witnessed the stable income and job security his father, a carman, enjoyed, and knew he wanted to carry on the family tradition.
Based in Hanford, California, Chavez starts his day with a team conference call to discuss the day’s tasks and safety measures. Next, they check their PPE, ensure their work vehicles are in good condition, and stock up on supplies before heading out to the tracks. There, they inspect multiple crossings and switches.
The work can be tough, with extreme weather conditions and irregular hours. It’s far from a typical office job. However, it’s also very rewarding, offering great opportunities for advancement and the chance to learn new skills.
“Railroading is hard work, but all the perks and benefits make it all worth it. I am proud to be a railroader for BNSF.” – Gabriel Chavez, BNSF signal maintainer.
